The inspiration for our
film choice mainly comes from the Film Noir genre and the game of Cluedo.
Another film based on this murder mystery game is the 1985 film Clue.
Clue
Clue is
about 6 guests, a butler and a maid in a large house that are involved within a
web of murder and lies. All the characters are inspired by this game, along
with their connections and motives to commit murder. Though this film is based
on a game of murder mystery, it is mainly a comedy, involving hilarious twists
and scenes. Its tagline “It's Not Just A Game Anymore” is a direct connection
to the inspiration of the film.
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Certificate: PG
Why PG? This film contains sexual humor and
references, including passionate kissing scenes and well as revealing costumes
of the maid. There are scenes of murder, but 4 out of the 7 deaths contain no
blood. Casual drinking and smoking is witnessed throughout the film and the
word ‘bastard’ is only used once. Though the film contains a number of murders
and intense scenes, the film has a very light tone and focuses more on the
comical effect.
Characters:
The female characters in this movie are well known for having the main conservational base of men. This can represent how female characters in films can be used mainly to exemplify the importance or impact of the male characters.
Film Noir
Film Noir
contains certain characteristics that are dominant parts of the genre and plot.
The themes tend to be unsettling, containing ambiguity and violent deaths.
Feeling of isolation and dis-trust, conflicting characters along with
beautiful, determined, scheming women build up the body and framework of Film
Noir.
Double Idemnity
Double
Idemnity is an example of a popular Film Noir movie, made in 1944. This film is
a crime thriller about how an insurance salesman is tempted into murder by a
duplicitous housewife. The mood of this film is very shady, dark, seductive,
scheming, and dismal.
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Certificate: PG
Why PG? Double Idemnity is a PG due the
amount of smoking and violence involved. It does not involve any nudity or
sexual scene other than an adultery scene being implied and a seductive affair
only being portrayed using mood, dialogue and innuendoes, and consists of no
profanity.
Characters:
Protagonists
in Film Noir tend to have generalized characteristics or biographies. They tend
to always be single men of the law (detectives,
cops or ex-cops) who have psychological flaws or differences. They usually seem
to be confident, morally committed and have a certain level of intellect or
understanding of crime with their own codes of right and wrong.
