Conventions of the Drama Genre

Drama
Drama films exhibit believable storylines which often contain a physical/mental journey, which moves the audience emotionally.
There are also many sub-genres of drama that can be interlaced within a storyline. Due to the context of our film, that could be:
  • A crime drama - due to drugs, theft, etc.
  • A tragic drama (melo drama) - due to the fact that the sister is ill and subsequently, she dies.
The Plot in a Conventional Drama
  1. Everything appears normal
  2. Something goes wrong
  3. Protagonist and helper sent on quest
  4. TWIST
  5. Protagonist and helper back on quest
  6. Meet/defeat villain
  7. 'Happily ever after' ending
All in all a drama film is full of peaks and troughs of emotion and action.

The Plot in our Film
  1. We don't show steps 1 or 2 in our film instead the audience just assumes
  2. that they were once a happy family and are now overcome by the girls' illness.
  3. Our protagonist (without a helper) goes on a quest to make money
  4. Audience realises that she was raising money for sister, not for personal gain
  5. Treatment doesn't work and sisters are back where they started, she's still ill
  6. Our characters don't defeat the villain (illness) as she dies
  7. Our film has no 'happily ever after'
