To Die or NOT to Die?

To Die or NOT to Die?

Due to the already very serious nature of the film I was unsure whether we should have Hope die in the end. Therefore, I researched similar films and compared their endings.

My Sisters Keeper

In the end of the book version of this story, the sister who is NOT ill is tragically killed in a car crash and so her kidney is transplanted and her ill sister survives.
HOWEVER, in the film version, which we are more concerned with, the ill sister is overcome will illness and is killed off in the end.

The Fault in Our Stars
The first ill character that is introduced is Hazel who has terminal cancer.  Therefore, if any character was to die, the audience expects it to be her. However at her cancer support group, her soon to be boyfriend Gus is introduced, who, despite having overcome his cancer, is the one that loses his life to the disease.

50/50

The cancer story in this film is a young man with a tumour on his spine. The movie follows his time through dealing with the cancer, including relationship troubles and a sidekick to help him on his way. The ending is a cliff hanger on If he'll survive his lifesaving operation or not; fortunately for the audience he does.

Considering the success of these three films, I think I would prefer to kill off Hope, just to heighten the emotion felt by our audience when watching the film.
